Free Museum Days

Those who live in Los Angeles know that we have plenty of cultural events besides touring Universal Studios. Pacific Standard Time is a collaboration of cultural institutions celebrating the birth of the L.A. art scene. In October 2011, over 60 cultural institutions will make their contributions to depicting the L.A. art movement from 1945 to 1980. To start off these exhibits and events, there will be a free museum day on October 2nd for those listed on the PST website. If you can’t make it this Sunday, check out Free Museum Day devoted to showing you…

Laguna Beach

This is the month that Laguna Beach shines – the art fair, the wonderful downtown, and cheap eats in between the trendier restaurants. Take a day off from the world and step into the leisure atmosphere that makes it quintessential California. Laguna Beach is famous for its artists’ community. However Art-A-Fair goes beyond to discover artists from around the world and in other parts of the country as well as those who live right here in Laguna.  On weekends, Art-A-Fair bustles with live entertainment and the works of 125 artists. Use the discount ticket on…

Goldstar

They say that everything that goes up must come down.  With Goldstar you bring down the price of theater, wine tasting, and sports events.  You get to join Goldstar for free and each ticket has a fee attached to the price.   This might be the perfect time to gift your partner, business associate, or friend with an outing to their or your favorite venue. Let’s walk through the process with Hair at the Pantages. The Frugal Diva has a soft spot for this play from her era and wants to share the experience with the Frugal Dude.  Place…

The Annenberg Space for Photography

Another place to take out of town guests, The Annenberg Space for Photography is a great destination for those interested in the art of the photo. They have set up an intimate space at 2000 Avenue of the Stars in Century City.  With a design inspired by the photo lens, the space allows viewing each photo without crowding.  This is a very user friendly space with areas for watching videos related to the exhibit and reading photography books. And this resource is free. How much better could this be? You can also park at the Century City shopping mall for…

Summertime And The Livin’ Is Easy

It’s summer and frugal divas love the outdoors. Well, by that I mean outdoor areas close to my home. Sorry someone else will have to let you know about the joys of camping. The Getty is not just for art lovers. They are hosting a film series starting this Saturday June 11. The only expense is parking and it is free after 5 PM for the Saturday events. They have a bar and cafe where you can get nibbles or bring your own picnic basket.  Come at five, see some exhibits, eat, and enjoy the view. My kind…

Sawtelle Blvd

Los Angeles is not all malls and chain stores.  There are great little niche stores and eateries all over town.  The stretch of Sawtelle between Olympic and about Missouri is packed with Japanese restaurants, markets, and shops.  Let’s start with the Nijaya Market (2130 Sawtelle). The Frugal Diva loves going to new grocery stores-products with labels in other languages, different spices, interesting fruits and vegetables, new types of grinders and cookware, speciality prepared foods.  I could spend a day here just perusing tea pots while taking a lunch break of prepared sushi, dumplings, and seaweed salad.  This…
