Laguna Beach

Posted by The Frugal Diva on 27th July 2011

This is the month that Laguna Beach shines – the art fair, the wonderful downtown, and cheap eats in between the trendier restaurants. Take a day off from the world and step into the leisure atmosphere that makes it quintessential California.

Laguna Beach is famous for its artists’ community. However Art-A-Fair goes beyond to discover artists from around the world and in other parts of the country as well as those who live right here in Laguna.  On weekends, Art-A-Fair bustles with live entertainment and the works of 125 artists. Use the discount ticket on their site to save $3 off the $7 Admission.

The Frugal Diva enjoys walking along the ocean, rather then actually lying on the sand. There is a board walk to roam over the seven miles of beaches and coves for looking into the horizon and enjoying the splashy hotels such as the Montage. Remember sun block and hats since there is little shade.

All that art and walking can make a person hungry. However, I thought this might be the day to eat light and picked the vegan restaurant The Stand with fresh veggie burgers and smoothies. For a more traditional breakfast and lunch try the dog friendly Madison Square, where there are great sandwiches and omelets.

Visitors to Los Angeles, do not miss this unique town and Los Angelenos enjoy a mini vacation only an hour from home.

YP

Posted by The Frugal Diva on 20th July 2011

It took a few minutes for me to recognize YP.com as the new and might I add much better Yellow Pages. In a feat of rebranding, they have transformed into a deal making, weather information, and local event finder for your city. They are making local search easier and more fun since you can narrow by category and neighborhood.

Let’s say during this long summer vacation you may need a bowling alley to entertain the kids while you get a drink. Voila!  Lucky Strike where the fun comes with great food and a full bar. Pick a movie theater and pack everyone up for a matinee of Harry Potter or park the kids and find a theater that serves lunch.

With the overwhelming amount of deals, YP has taken the time to organize them into categories.  Right now registering with the deals a day part of the site gets you a $5 credit so the first deal will have substantial savings.

YP.com has developed a fun site that also has all the serious information locals want at their fingertips from hospitals to automotive repair to vets for their pets. Each listing has a map alongside to make directions a snap. You can even compare hotel rates for visiting relatives.

Enter your location and let your fingertips (or mouse) do the walking. The best part, you can still look up that person or business once you check out the next concert at the Hollywood Bowl, where to get Chinese food for take out, and looked through the top National Park adventures.

Disclaimer: YP.com sent me two lovely eclairs from the EM Artists Cafe. They were yummy and in no way effected my review of the site. However I cannot say the same for my waistline.

Goldstar

Posted by The Frugal Diva on 19th July 2011

They say that everything that goes up must come down.  With Goldstar you bring down the price of theater, wine tasting, and sports events.  You get to join Goldstar for free and each ticket has a fee attached to the price.   This might be the perfect time to gift your partner, business associate, or friend with an outing to their or your favorite venue.

Let’s walk through the process with Hair at the Pantages. The Frugal Diva has a soft spot for this play from her era and wants to share the experience with the Frugal Dude.  Place an order for two tickets for Friday night in the rear orchestra.  They come to $50 each with fees while the full price ticket is $78.  This is a savings of $28 per ticket plus the Goldstar fee.

They also feature discounted cooking classes,  children’s theater, massages, and sporting events.

There are a lot of newbies on the discount scene however the Frugal Diva likes oldies that deliver the goods. Count on Goldstar to have the best and be sure to check out their listings in other cities including NYC, San Francisco, Miami, Washington DC, and Viva Las Vegas.

Disclaimer:  Goldstar has always been one of my “go to” discount entertainment sites however now that there are all these new rules please be aware that I serve on the NU Club of LA board with Toni Perling who is employed by Goldstar.

The Annenberg Space for Photography

Posted by The Frugal Diva on 8th June 2011

Another place to take out of town guests, The Annenberg Space for Photography is a great destination for those interested in the art of the photo. They have set up an intimate space at 2000 Avenue of the Stars in Century City.  With a design inspired by the photo lens, the space allows viewing each photo without crowding.  This is a very user friendly space with areas for watching videos related to the exhibit and reading photography books.

And this resource is free. How much better could this be? You can also park at the Century City shopping mall for three hours for free or validated self-parking is $3.50 for three hours in the garage directly beneath the building, Monday through Friday 8:30am to 4:30pm. Weekdays after 4:30PM and on Saturday and Sunday, parking is a flat rate of $1.00 with validation.

And even better, they have a free lecture series on Thursdays (reservations are required).

The current exhibit (now until Nov. 27, 2011)  BEAUTY CULTURE provides a seminal examination of photography’s role in capturing and defining notions of modern female beauty and how these images profoundly influence our lives in both celebratory and disturbing ways.

Summertime And The Livin’ Is Easy

Posted by The Frugal Diva on 8th June 2011

It’s summer and frugal divas love the outdoors. Well, by that I mean outdoor areas close to my home. Sorry someone else will have to let you know about the joys of camping.

The Getty is not just for art lovers. They are hosting a film series starting this Saturday June 11. The only expense is parking and it is free after 5 PM for the Saturday events. They have a bar and cafe where you can get nibbles or bring your own picnic basket.  Come at five, see some exhibits, eat, and enjoy the view.

My kind of fresh air fun is the Santa Monica Pier free movie series. Come early and take a walk along the Palisades, bring a picnic for the beach or grab a snack at the Promenade, and enjoy the ocean view! This is why we put up with all the traffic.

Every Thursday evening from 5 to 8 is free at MOCA. Enjoy art while mixing and mingling with the downtown denizens.  And downtown now offers free concerts at the Grand Plaza

And would you leave out Culver City. It is the 17th Annual Music Festival. Free concerts on July 7th and every Thursday nights at seven until August 25 and all the great eateries including a Trader Joe’s where you can pick up a salad to munch while you enjoy the music.

Farmers markets have become fun places to hang out.  Use this great website Farmernet.com to find the one nearest you or be brave and venture out to one in another neighborhood. Meet other fresh food lovers, buy great produce, and enjoy my idea of the outdoors.

Now these are the things that make me a happy camper!

Hulu

Posted by The Frugal Diva on 26th April 2011

Break your cable chains.  Stop searching through 400 channels and finding nothing to watch.  Those who are trying to save on cable or giving up cable here is the solution. Hulu.com gives you access to television the way you want it – free, watch what you want when you want, and with the most minimal of commercial breaks (about sixty seconds altogether).  Start a show, stop it, take a break, and finish it later.

My only problem is tearing myself away when I could be watching five episodes of House.  Or catching up on the Jon Stewart Show or the Colbert Report. Actually as I am writing this, I have last night’s Daily Show on. Ricky Gervais is hysterical. Lost fans, here is your chance to figure out what is going on. Foodie fans watch your faves like Giada Cooks Italian and Bobby Flay. Introduce kids to old episodes of your favorites like the Dick Van Dyke show, the Rocky and Bullwinkle show, Sesame Street, and the Benji movies. And they have even more niche items like highlights from the Auto show, interviews with the stars, and the training of Olympic speed skaters.

Investing in a good computer monitor will enhance the experience.  This is a one time expense as opposed to a huge monthly fee.

This is a perfect Frugal Diva experience – all choice and no fees.

Free And Low Cost Fun For Kids

Posted by The Frugal Diva on 24th April 2011

A Big Thank You to Jennifer Moss of  BabyNames.com for providing this great list of activities that are free or low cost, build creativity and skills for kids, and are bonding experiences beween parent and child. She did forget to mention  how much fun it is to look up names on her site and things like character tips for writers, what are cool names now and in the past, and games for baby showers.

1. Your local library – get your child his/her own library card, it makes them feel very important and introduces them to the awesome library system. Make it a weekly trip and allow them to pick out 3 books at a time.  Some municipal libraries even have bookmobiles that may be in your neighborhood!  The library is also an inexpensive place to rent videos. At the Los Angeles Public Library they are usually free!

2. Your local recreation center. Many rec centers (like Westwood on Sepulveda) allow you to swim for a couple dollars per person.  Hours of enjoyment for little money! Rec centers also have affordable summer programs for kids, since they are sponsored by the city.

3. After school day care: LAUSD public schools have a free after school program called “YS” (Youth Services).  Take advantage of this if you can’t pick up your child and don’t want to pay a babysitter! YS coordinators are usually teachers from the school and they do outdoor activities with the kids they know.

4. Make your own restaurant! For dinner one night, make it fancy without going out!  Type up a little “menu” and play restaurant with your kids. Decorate your table with candles and let them make a centerpiece. Take turns being the “waiter!” Variation:While eating dinner, let your kid pretend they’re you and you pretend to be them. It is very revealing what they say, how they act and how you’re seen from their eyes!  You can also use this opportunity to point out some of their bad habits (like whining or chewing with their mouth open).

5. Have “pioneer night” where no electricity is used. This is harder for the adults than the kids! Can you go one whole night without power? No internet, no tv, no videos! Be creative and spend a whole evening with your kids in the dark! Stock up on candles and flashlights before you do this. It saves on the electric bill AND prepares your kids for emergencies!

6. Don’t have bikes? Rent them! Many of the L.A. beaches have bike rentals. If you don’t have bikes of your own, take the kids down to the beach for the day and rent bikes. For less than $10 you can have a great active day that they’ll love.

7. Bowling! Remember bowling? There are still lanes out there and you don’t even have to keep score anymore! Bowling alleys have many “off” times that are only a couple dollars a game. Check out your local bowling alley and ask for the bumpers for the kids!(Bumpers guaranteed to improve your game too!)

8. Baking. Bake with your kids. It’s fun for them to be part of the creative process and only costs a couple dollars for cake mix and frosting (or cookie dough).

9. Walks, parks and playdates. Take advantage of walking in your neighborhood and local parks. Walk slowly and point out flowers and interesting landmarks to your child.  If they are younger, practice colors and counting (“what color is that flower?”, “How many red cars can you count during our walk?”).  Barter play dates with your kids and their friends.  Play dates are a great way for parents to get “alone time” without paying for sitters.  Take the kids and their friends to the local park!  Better than video games and they won’t get bored as easily! Take a picnic lunch or snacks so they have some downtime between running and jumping! Bad weather? Take them to the mall — most malls have child play-places for free.

10. Share your picture/video camera with your kids. Most kids pick up on electronics quickly, so show them how to use the video camera and tell them to make a TV show all by themselves–with commercials!! It usually keeps them busy for hours and the result is usually hilarious!

If you don’t have kids, many of these activities are fun for adults too!

Malibu For The Rest Of Us

Posted by The Frugal Diva on 19th April 2011

Yes, there are many places to spend big bucks in Malibu however enjoy this beautiful town for an afternoon and spend less then $20 for a day vacation. The Adamson House Tour  is a guided tour through the house which contains its original furnishings and is decorated with the renowned Malibu Potteries tile. Trained volunteer docents relate the history of the house, details of its architecture and furnishings, and the history of the family that lived in and created this distinctive home. And what does this all cost -$5.00 per person includes a house tour.

The Malibu Lagoon Museum adjoins the Adamson House and contains a collection of artifacts, rare photographs and documents depicting the colorful history of Malibu. The museum tour takes the visitor from the early Chumash Indian era through the Spanish California culture. Here is an excellent opportunity to relive the genteel and romantic ranching days of the famed Rindge and Adamson families. Learn about dramatic episodes in Malibu’s rich history: the Malibu Railroad; the 17-year legal battle over a Malibu highway; the Malibu movie colony; the Malibu Dam, and much, much more. Admission to the Museum is free.

Take a walk through the Cross Creek Malibu Country Mart outdoor shopping center (the parking is free). Now there are a lot of upscale places in Malibu however there are many great choices for the Frugal Divas among us. Malibu Howdy’s Taqueria in Cross Creek village has counter service and most items on the menu are under $10 and they are fantastic. Great tacos, great salads, and great breakfasts if you get there before eleven thirty.  There is a Starbucks for those just in the mood for caffeine and a snack.

Travel about a mile and a half further up the coast and try Malibu Seafood Company  (they have a free parking lot) on PCH. Counter service with most items around $10 (I had an out of this world ahi tuna burger with fries for $8.95), grilled seafood dinners around $15. They have their own parking lot. Fabulous location across the street from the beach. Go to the upper deck seating for the best ocean view.

Beautiful museum, enjoy the laid back atmosphere, walk where the stars really shop, and great food all make Malibu a fun day away for Los Angelenos in need of an ocean view and a relaxed atmosphere.
